Leslie Garcia baked up a career helping Oliver Law Firm’s clients

Leslie Garcia graduated from high school with two very different areas of passion in her life: baking and criminology.

It seemed unlikely that she could mix those interests like ingredients for a cake, so she went to a community college and began taking classes in each to see if one might emerge over the other as a career path. For a few years she kept her professional fingers in both pies, so to speak, but it was her culinary mentors who eventually directed her to a job with the Oliver Law Firm.

Leslie spent five years working full-time for a major transportation and logistics company. On the side, however, she worked for a catering company, where she continued to hone her culinary skills.

Several people at the catering company, including Leslie’s mentor, knew and respected Sach Oliver. When a job opened at his law firm, her mentor suggested she apply. It ended up costing the catering company a baker, but their loss was the Oliver Law Firm’s gain.

Leslie went through four interviews for the role of Sach’s assistant, but it became clear that her background in the trucking industry and her interest in investigations made her perfect for a different position.

Trucking companies are often defendants in the catastrophic injury cases handled by the law firm. And Leslie had experience doing background checks on new truck drivers and as a recruiter who helped the trucking company find independent contractors for its large corporate clients. So instead of working directly for Sach, she became a legal assistant and Special Projects manager.

“Growing up, I was always interested in investigations and detective work,” Leslie says. “And now that’s basically what I do at my job.”

Leslie spends much of her time reviewing documents and records provided by defense attorneys to determine if the defendant followed state and federal laws, as well as their own internal policies and procedures.

“Now that I work for a firm that mostly handles personal injury cases against trucking companies, I am able to use what I know about trucking companies and their policies,” she said. “I can see when they didn’t follow their policies. And because I’ve worked in both fields, I’m also very careful about driving next to semi-trucks.”

When Leslie finds that a defendant’s actions didn’t align with laws or corporate policies, she creates visual aids that illustrate the discrepancies. Oliver’s attorneys use those in depositions and other presentations to help make their client’s case.

Leslie’s work with the Oliver Law Firm and her role raising her 8-year-old son Axel no longer leave her time for the part-time job with the catering company, but she hasn’t given up cooking and baking.

“I cook and bake for my parents and for my son,” she says. “I love baking cakes. A tres leches cake – a strawberry shortcake – is my favorite to make. And as far as cooking dishes, I’m more of a big pasta maker. And so, my lemon pasta with asparagus is always the best thing that I like to make my parents.”

Food and family are a huge part of Leslie’s life, but she also finds satisfaction in her work, especially in her relationships with colleagues and clients.

“I’m able to create a bond with our clients,” she said. “They have gone through a rough time, but I can show my empathy to them and be there for them. I just love to be able to do that for them. I have clients I talk to on a weekly basis. I check up on them, or they want to tell me something. It’s important that they know that we’re there for them.”

Leslie works primarily with attorneys Sam Mason and Andrea McCurdy on what the Oliver Law Firm refers to as its “Generations” team, and she points out that they are very different from the stereotypical personalities many people think of for lawyers.

“The attorneys I work with are such genuine people,” she said. “They truly, truly care about their clients. It makes me happy and grateful to be working for people who see things the way that I see things. I feel very blessed to be here and work alongside Sach and these attorneys and be with our clients.”
