New Technology and Safety Challenges

Millions of people travel by highways, airways, waterways and railways each day in the United States. While laws and awareness have made travel much safer, we still have a long ways to go. New technologies may bring new advantages, but they also present new challenges, which means that safety is a never-ending task.

In November 2016 the National Transportation Safety Board released its vital Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety Improvements. We agree with this year’s list of priorities and urge transportation industry leaders to work with policy makers to address these concerns immediately.

We want to review the list and why they are important, but first, let’s talk about the Most Wanted List itself.

About the Most Wanted List

“The Most Wanted List, organized by topic area, is the NTSB’s premier advocacy tool. It identifies the top safety improvements that can be made across all modes to prevent accidents and save lives in the future. These issue areas are both significant in impact and ripe for action,” according to the NTSB report.

This year’s report is different from year’s past because it now covers two years instead of one.

NTSB Chairman Christopher Hart recently explained that the list’s new two-year cycle would “help to focus our advocacy efforts on sustained progress. We will take stock at the one-year mark, note what progress has been made, and decide what additional improvements are needed.”

Eliminate Distractions

  • Reduce fatigue-related accidents
  • Prevent loss of control in flight in general aviation
  • Improve rail transit safety oversight
  • End alcohol and other drug impairment in transportation
  • Increase implementation of collision avoidance technologies
  • Expand recorder use to enhance safety
  • Require medical fitness
  • Strengthen occupant protection
  • Ensure the safe shipment of hazardous material

We look forward to seeing the safety improvements that come from this list over the next two years.
