National Texting and Driving Campaign Kicks Off in Fayetteville

Each year, over 100,000 traffic accidents are attributed to texting and driving negligence, and a national campaign aimed at reducing this number began Thursday, September 19 in River Valley and Northwest Arkansas.

The “It Can Wait” initiative is placing police officers in the area with cameras and video to catch distracted drivers while they text in hopes of eliminating future accidents on our roads and highways. MLK during high-traffic times of day will be a target.

We wanted to get involved on the front end and make sure that the citizenry knows we are taking it seriously, that we’ve all got loved one’s that are on the road and we’d like for everybody to take it serious and pay attention,” said Washington County Sheriff, Tim Helder.

Mayor Lioneld Jordan of Fayetteville is scheduled to speak on the campaign Thursday.
