How To Keep Your Child Safe In Your Car

There is nobaby in car seatthing more valuable to our society and ourselves than our children. We all want to go to the maximum length’s necessary to make sure they are as safe as can be, and one of the most dangerous places a young child can be is in an automobile. A staggering statistic came out from Child Passenger Safety Program not too long ago that says 90% to 100% of car seats are misused.

Fortunately, there are a few simple safety checks parents can do to make sure their child is safely secured in the car seat. One of the most common mistakes with the use of car seats is the recline angle they are set at. Most seats have a built-in recline indicator that should allow for setting the correct angle which is anywhere from 35 – 45 degrees. You should tend toward the 35-degree end for older babies and the 45-degree end for younger babies because they need the head support.

The Academy of Pediatrics and Consumer Reports also recommends that a child should not be turned facing forward in the car until after they are older than 2 and heavier than 20 pounds. They also recommend parents to check that the straps are tightened enough, and to make sure the chest clip is not set too low. The correct location for the chest clip is on the chest at the top of the armpits. Additionally, you want to make sure that the lap belt is not lying across the stomach of the child.

Making sure these steps are followed could be the difference in a child’s life.
