GM Announces Recall on 778,562 Compact Cars after Fatal Accidents

General Motors announced it will recall 778,562 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compact cars to fix a faulty ignition switch that may disable the airbags during an accident.

A GM spokesperson stated the company is aware of 22 such collisions including five where six people were killed. The spokesperson also stated these accidents occurred under unusual circumstances where the vehicles were being operated at high speeds across rough terrain and dirt, neither of which condition was designed for the vehicles operation.

The recall includes a total of 778,562 Chevrolet Cobalt’s and Pontiac G5 cars sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from the 2005 to 2007 model years.

The issues involves the ignition switch turning off as a result of heavy key chains and rough road conditions. This may result in the engine turning off, along with all electrical components including the airbags, power steering, and power-assisted breaks.

GM stated auto dealers will replace the ignition switch free of charge; in the meantime it is recommended for all drivers to remove any access items off the key chain to avoid a disaster from occurring.

As alarming as it may seem, this was the second large automotive recall in the United States this week.

On Wednesday, Toyota recalled nearly one million vehicles sold in the U.S. as a result of software glitches. The recall included nearly 700,000 Prius hybrid vehicles from the 2010 to 2014 model years to fix an issue causing the vehicle to stall.

In addition, the recall would include 260,000 2012 RAV4s, model year 2012 to 2013 Tacoma’s and model year 2012 to 2013 Lexus RX350s to fix a circuit causing the vehicles stability control, anti-lock brakes, and traction control features to turn off while driving.
